Ducati Sport Classic FAQ
Everything you’ve wanted to know about owning, modifying, and maintaining the Ducati Sport Classic series.
🔧 General Maintenance & Ownership
Q: Are Sport Classics reliable for regular riding?
A: Yes — with proper maintenance, these bikes can be very reliable. That said, they’re getting older, and parts like fuel lines, rubber, and electronics should be checked and upgraded if they haven’t been serviced recently. We offer services to refresh the bikes and bring them back to their original state, or as close to!
Q: My Sport Classic gets hot easily — is that normal?
A: It can be, especially in warmer climates or stop-and-go traffic. A performance oil cooler or heavier weight oil (15W-50) can help reduce heat. Make sure your bike’s fueling is dialed in and the fan/thermostat is working properly. If you notice anything funny, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Q: The bike has been sitting for years — what should I do before riding?
A: Drain and replace the fluids, inspect the fuel tank (look for expansion/swelling or stress marks), change the belts, make sure your valves are in spec, check the chain/sprockets, and consider replacing the battery and tires. We offer inspection and restart services for long-dormant bikes.
Q: Are my rims/wheels tubeless?
A: Check for a valve stem hole — if it’s there and not paired with a tube, it’s likely been converted to tubeless. If not, it’s probably a tube-type setup.
Q: My bike starts and idles but dies after a little, what is causing this?
A: This could be old fuel, clogged fuel line, faulty fuel pump/filter, spark plugs, or a failing voltage regulator. A quick test: turn the key with the tank still and watch the fuel — ripples indicate a weak fuel pump. We carry fuel pump kits, spark plugs, and upgraded regulators.
Q: Should I replace my Voltage Regulator?
A: Yes — they’re known to fail and can cause electrical fires that may damage surrounding components. We offer a high-quality JCPB aftermarket regulator for $275, in stock now.
Q: My immobilizer seems to not be working properly, what should I do?
A: Check the antenna ring under the ignition housing — it may need replacement. We can also flash your ECU to remove the immobilizer system entirely.
Q: My Cam End Cap is leaking, what should I do?
A: Start by replacing the cam end gasket. If it still leaks, clean the area and apply gray RTV silicone to both surfaces before reinstalling. That usually solves the issue.
Q: My tank has expanded and is rubbing against parts it shouldn’t — what now?
A: We can shrink the tank and coat the inside with a fuel-safe epoxy to prevent future swelling. This is a service we offer regularly.
Q: My Caswell Epoxy tank coating is cracking or failing — what do I do?
A: We’ve repaired many failed Caswell-sealed tanks. We strip the old epoxy and recoat with a non-Caswell solution that’s proven to last.
Q: My battery died and I need a replacement — what do you recommend?
A: We recommend the OEM-spec battery, which we stock. We don’t suggest lithium batteries for these bikes due to known issues.
Q: When I compress the front forks, I hear a knocking sound — what is it?
A: It could be forks, springs, calipers, brakes, or even rotors. Reach out for diagnosis and we’ll help pinpoint and fix the issue.
Q: What tires do you recommend?
A: Michelin tires work well for most Sport Classic riders. Choose based on your riding style — twisties or straights.
🛠 Customization
Q: Can I convert my Sport 1000 into a Paul Smart replica or a GT1000 into a Sport Classic?
A: Yes! We’ve done several conversions using OEM or aftermarket fairings, clip-ons, and paint. It’s not a simple bolt-on job, but it’s totally doable — and stunning when done right. We stock parts like top triples, clip-ons, and offer custom solutions.
Q: Will a GT1000 seat fit a Sport 1000 (or vice versa)?
A: No, not directly — but we can convert them for you for a fee.
Q: Can I use a Zard exhaust on my Biposto?
A: Not without a Monoposto swingarm — the two setups are not compatible. We stock Monoposto swingarms if you’re interested in converting.
Q: What performance upgrades do you recommend?
A: A high-flow exhaust (Termignoni, Zard — in stock), upgraded ECU or Power Commander, intake filters, lighter wheels, and Ohlins suspension all make a big difference. We tailor upgrade paths to your riding style and goals.
Q: Should I upgrade my air filter from the OEM paper one?
A: If you’re tuning or running a flash, yes. If you’re a casual rider, the stock paper filter works just fine. Same applies to pod filters.
Q: My bike runs hot in warm weather — what can I do?
A: You can run 15W-50 oil or install an NCR Race Oil Cooler (in stock) to help control temps.
Q: I installed a Termignoni, Zard, or Arrow exhaust — do I need a remap?
A: It’s not required, but you may notice backfiring at 3–4k rpm. We offer custom ECU remaps for these setups.
Q: Can I run exposed belts?
A: Yes — but they’re at greater risk of damage from debris. If you ride in dusty, sandy, or coastal areas, we recommend against it.
Q: Do you offer concours-level restorations?
A: Yes — we specialize in OEM-accurate concourse restorations, down to the washers. Perfect for show builds and competition entries.
Q: Where can I get the tail light from Tron: Legacy?
A: That’s the Fleda Tail Light. We’ve sold it for nearly 20 years and it’s still the best on the market. In stock — $450 single row, $499 double row.
Q: How do I get rid of the triangle passenger foot pegs?
A: We offer Aella Exhaust Hangers + Mounts and Mack Exhaust Hangers (requires OEM or Aella mounts).
Q: I’m repainting my gas tank — where can I find the badges and stripes?
A: We stock black with white outline and white with black outline badges, as well as matching stripes. Note: factory paint is heavy on clear coats, so matching exactly can be difficult.
Q: Can I install Ducati 999 wheels on my Sport 1000?
A: Yes — it’s a common swap. You’ll need a spacer kit, rotors, and sprockets. We can help with parts and install.
🧰 Parts, Service & Sourcing
Q: Is it hard to find parts for these bikes now?
A: Some OEM parts are discontinued, but we stock and source many hard-to-find components. We also fabricate custom parts as needed — anything can be made for the right price.
Q: How much does a custom job cost?
A: It depends on the scope. A simple paint job is different from a full frame-up build. Get in touch and we’ll go over options and pricing with you.
Q: Can I run an NCR race cam with stock pistons?
A: Yes — but you will need to check and adjust your valve clearances accordingly.
Q: What’s the best way to clean brake and clutch fittings?
A: Use brass wool instead of steel wool — it won’t embed in the aluminum and cause rust over time.
📦 Shipping, Drop-Offs & Booking
Q: I’m not local — can I ship my bike in for service or a build?
A: Absolutely. We work with reputable motorcycle shipping services and will help you coordinate a safe pickup and drop-off.
Q: Can I schedule a service consult or phone call?
A: Definitely. We offer hourly phone support and project consultations. Call or email to book a time.
Q: How far out are you booked for custom work?
A: It varies — but usually we’re booked several months out. Reach out early to reserve a spot on our build calendar.
